Taking out sewn stitches is already aggravating enough but what when it comes to serged stitches? Even worse when you use 4 instead of 3 thread cones, right? Unpicking serger stitches is not that bad if you do it the right way.
How To Take Out A Serged Seam
This method I learned not too long ago when it dawned on me that unpicking serged seams shouldn’t be that much of a pain. There had to be an easier way. I tried different ways but at the end agreed, that this way is the easiest.

Materials used in this tutorial:
- Seam ripper
- Tape
- Lint roller
- The pretty fabric I used is from the Robert Kaufman’s Cherry Blossom Garden Collection
Step by step instructions
Place your project in front of you with the serged seam facing up. Grab your seam ripper and insert the long tip into the upper row (marked with arrow) of your stitches (this is for a 4-thread cone serged seam). Gently rip the thread and continue to feed the seam ripper through. You’ll get the hang of it pretty quickly and may or may not enjoy the sound it makes when the thread breaks 😉
This is what your ripped stitches on the upper row look like now.

Now insert your seam ripper into the bottom row as shown in the image below and feed it through until all stitches are broken.
Spread your project out so that the right side faces up. Position your seam ripper with the long edge under the fabric and the short edge on top, insert it into the seam and gently push the seam ripper forward to separate the stitches completely.
This is what your project should look like now.
Using your fingers, remove as many threads as possible with a few grips. Don’t stress to remove every little piece of thread because here is a fun tip that saves a bunch of time.
