5 No-Sew Summer Projects For Kids
1. Spring Rag Wreath
Kids can turn pieces of odds and ends fabric into a simple to make no-sew spring wreath. It’s a summer project that the whole family will want to get involved in.
Materials needed for the spring rag wreath:
•Scraps of fabric •Scissors or rotary cutter •12″ or larger embroidery hoop
Directions:
Cut 100 or more 1″ x 7″ strips of fabric. Separate the hoop and use only one of the rings. Tie the strips close together and knot each one. Cover the entire hoop, and fluff the fringes when done to create a fuller appearance. The more strips of fabric you use, the fluffier the wreath will look. You could also add additional decorative items to the wreath, such as birds, butterflies, buttons, or ribbon.
2. Spider Stick Puppet
This is the perfect no-sew fabric project to make with your preschool child. You can teach her the song about the itsy bitsy spider as you help her make this adorable little felt stick puppet.
Materials needed for the spider stick puppet:
•Two 5” x 5” squares of black felt •Four red pipe cleaners cut in half •Fabric glue •Two craft wiggly eyes •One 4” diameter circle template (download the template HERE) •Handful of cotton stuffing •One large popsicle stick •Scissors •Felt hole-punch
Directions:
Place the two pieces of felt together on table and cut around the circle template to create two circles. Glue one end of the craft popsicle stick to the bottom inside of one of the felt circle. Place a little bit of cotton stuffing on top of the felt circle and place the other felt circle on top. Carefully glue the inside of the edges of felt circles together. Allow to dry and then punch four holes on each side of the circle for adding legs. Put the pipe cleaners through the eight holes and twist ends to secure. Glue the two craft wiggly eyes on and let dry.
3. Fabric Wrapped Picture Frame
This is a fun no-sew fabric project for older kids and a cool way for them to display their artwork or favorite photos.
Materials needed for fabric wrapped picture frame:
•One picture frame •Fabric scraps •Scissors •Glue Cut fabric into strips and wrap each one tightly around the frame gluing the ends to the back of the frame. Continue this until the frame is completely covered. Use different patterns of fabric if you want to create a patchwork look.
4. No-Sew Fleece Pillow
This easy to make pillow is made with cheap fleece fabric and doesn’t require any sewing. It’s simple to make and an ideal craft project for older children to make on their own or with the entire family.
Materials needed for the no-sew fleece pillow:
•Two large square pieces of fleece fabric that are the exact same size •One bag of pillow stuffing •Ruler •Scissors •Masking tape
Directions:
Place both pieces of fabric together right sides out and lay flat. Place a line of tape four inches from the edge (end to end) of each side. The tape lines will create a square of fabric at each corner, in which you will need to cut out with the scissors. Cut one inch wide fringe strips to the tape line, which will create a fringe all the way around the fabric. Tie the fringe pieces of the top fabric to the ones on the bottom fabric on three of the sides. Once you’ve completed the three sides, place the stuffing evenly inside and tie the fringes on the fourth side.
5. Handmade Duster
This homemade duster is inexpensive to make, as it can be made from scraps of cheap fleece fabric. Children enjoy making thing for other people, and this duster is an easy and inexpensive gift for kids to make for grandparents, teachers, or babysitters.
Materials needed for the no-sew duster:
•Fleece scraps •Sturdy string •One 12 to 24 inch length of 3/4″ dowel •Small screw •Screwdriver
Directions:
Cut the fleece scraps into 12″ x 1/2″ strips and pile them neatly so that the ends are lined up evenly. The more strips you cut, the fuller it will be. Wind the sturdy string tightly around the middle and knot the string several times. You should end up with an item that looks much like a fleece “pom-pom.” Hold the middle of the pom-pom over the end of the dowel and insert the screw through the material. Use the screwdriver to turn the screw into the dowel.
