Sun Suit Pattern With Ruffle Straps
This little number can be changed up in several different ways! A sun suit is perfect for babies as it keeps them cool but also lends an adorable style that allows for movement. The free Maui 2-piece pattern was posted a while ago and meanwhile I have been seeing the most amazing little creations made from this free pattern. One reader asked me how to add ruffles to the straps and that gave me the idea to make this tutorial. I left the bottom elastic out from the crop top and omitted the bow.

Straps: Cut 2 pieces 14″x 2″ for up to size 12m and 20″x2″ for up to size 24m. NOTE: the straps are short! The longer the straps are, the more hazardous can they become!!! Never leave a child unattended when she is wearing this outfit!!!Once you have cut out the ties/straps fabric pieces, fold them over lengthwise and with right sides together. Also fold in the short edges 1/4″ and press and folds. Lay them aside unsewn.Let’s get to the ruffle pieces!
Materials & supplies needed:
- 2 fabric pieces (see measurements below) I used Jennifer Paganelli’s West Indies on the bloomers and the yellow fabric might have been a Riley Blake print.
- get the outfit’s measurements and crotch template download here
- sewing machine
- cutting board
- rotary cutter
- scissors
- ruler
- safety pin
- straight pins ([eafl id=15027 name=”heart shaped pins” text=”I love my heart shaped pins”])
- iron
Seam allowance for the ruffle pieces is 3/8″.
You can cut the ruffle pieces to your preferred measurements but the following measurements are my suggestion. Cut 2x of the following pieces:
Size 0m = 10″x3.5″, size 3-6m 10.5″x3.75″, size 9-12m 10.75″x4″, size 18-24m 11″x4.25″.
Start out with one of the ruffle pieces:
Fold it over lengthwise and with right sides together. Pin and sew the short ends. Trim off half of the seam allowance and turn piece with right sides out. Press flat.
Run a gathering stitch along the long open edge, sewing through both layers. Seam allowance needs to be 1/4″.
Pull gently on the thread on both sides to gather the fabric to about half the size of the ruffle fabric as it was before.
Place the ruffle piece into the fold of the strap, 1″ away from the bottom and pin in place. Then sew in place along the dashed lines.
Fold the strap over the stitches and pin in place. Sew (top stitch along the dashed line). Top stitch the entire strap and backstitch the beginning and end. You also want to sew the short ends.
Repeat with the other strap and you are ready to sew them onto the bodice as shown in this tutorial.
Finish the sun suit and get ready to enjoy your baby girls in them! The following pictures are courtesy of Rebekah Swanhall, one of my favorite photographers.
Enjoy and I hope you will view my other free tutorials & patterns for more great DIY inspiration!
