How To Add Ruffles To A Onesie

Do you need a quick but cute baby shower gift? Why not make an adorable ruffle butt onesie? This free tutorials shows you how to add ruffles to a onesie. It comes with a free bunny applique’ download as well. Let’s sew this together! See the following instructions.

All you need is a store bought onesie such as this cute white cotton one from Gerber which comes in a pack. Ready to sew this cute baby gift?

How to add ruffles to a onesie

Gather Your Materials:

  • Gerber onesie (I buy mine in bulk from [eafl id=15050 name=”Amazon gerber onesie” text=”Amazon”])
  • cotton fabric
  • [eafl id=15052 name=”sewing machine” text=”sewing machine”]
  • serger
  • fabric marker or pencil
  • cutting mat
  • rotary cutter
  • straight pins
  • iron on adhesive
  • bunny template (the one pictured is from my 5 free bunny applique’s from this post)
  • optional ribbon for bunny

Follow this quick 4-step tutorial:

Ruffle Butt Onesie with free bunny applique'. How to add ruffles to a onesie. A free tutorial | DIY Crush

  1. Unbutton the onesie and measure the width of the backside of your onesie and cut two strips of coordinating fabric of about 2″ long by twice the width of the onesie (best is woven cotton fabric). Then draw a straight line about 1/2 inch up from where the legs start, from one side to the other using a fabric marker or pencil.
  2. Serge the edges of the fabric strips (if you don’t have a serger you can cut the fabric 1″ longer and 1″ wider and fold in the edges twice 1/4″, sew them down. Gather your fabric along the top edge to the width of the backside of the onesie. The pin along the drawn line (only through the backside layer of the onesie). Sew the ruffle down using a stretch stitch. Backstitch the beginning and end.
  3. Repeat step 2 and 3 and sew on a second row of ruffles.

All done!

Your cute ruffle butt onesie is done!
