Today I want to show you how you can easily skip buttons on a {girls} vest and how to add ribbon. Vests are normally known for boys only but the pattern I am using offers a girls version with ruffles. I didn’t want to do the ruffles but wanted to make the vest a bit more girly. Read on how I did this…
For this project I am using Whimsy Couture’s Boys/Girl Vest sewing pattern which is a simple style vest, perfect for any dressy event or portraits. At the bottom of this post you will see more design examples of how this vest can be made and how it looks on.
I used this gorgeous dress forms fabric from Robert Kaufman called “Forget Me Not (available here) because I needed to make something to wear for my daughter’s career day at school. She wants to be a fashion designer 😉
How To Add Ribbon
Here is what I did:
First, I followed the tutorial of the vest sewing pattern until I reached the step where to sew inner and outer sides together. I cut two pretty long strips of 7/8″ satin ribbon in pale pink. I positioned one end of the ribbon about 1/4″ down from the corner (where the vest goes into the V-neck).
I tucked in the ribbon so it wouldn’t get sewn while closing the seams. Next I folded the outer side back over the ribbon and stitched it in place with a seam allowance of 1/4″ just so it wouldn’t shift before the seams gets sewn. Then I repeated this step and added ribbon to the other side of the vest.
Continue with tutorial until finished
I followed the tutorial for finishing the vest and just left off the buttons and buttonholes. The ribbon was extra long which I wanted so I tied the ribbon into a pretty bow and trimmed off the excess and applied FrayCheck to the ends so the ribbon wouldn’t fray. That’s it! My daughter now had a pretty vest with dressform fabric.
Note: I also made her a matching peasant top to go underneath 🙂
